Altay Bayindir has been chosen to start ahead of Andre Onana in today’s match against Burnley. Despite Onana training with the first team this week, he is set to be left out of the starting lineup. This decision highlights a clear shift in the pecking order between the sticks.
The choice comes after a period of intense scrutiny for Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper has faced criticism following two significant errors in a recent cup match, where he also saved just one out of twelve penalties in a shootout loss. While Onana has struggled, Bayindir has seized his opportunity, putting in two improved performances during the previous Premier League games.
The Turkish international’s overall game has shown notable improvement, particularly his distribution, which nearly resulted in an assist against Fulham. Though he made a mistake from a corner that led to a goal against Arsenal, the rest of his play demonstrated an increased confidence and solidity.
This selection sends a clear message from manager Ruben Amorim: poor performances will not be tolerated. Amorim has openly backed Bayindir in the past, even following the error against Arsenal, signaling his faith in the goalkeeper’s ability and long-term value to the team.
Additionally, attention has turned to Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who has impressed at Royal Antwerp and is reportedly the subject of intensified discussions with the Red Devils.
