Manchester United opted against signing a new midfielder during the summer transfer window, a decision that has been the subject of some debate. The club’s sources have indicated that bolstering the midfield was not a top priority, citing the existing roster of talented and versatile players.
The current midfield options for manager Ruben Amorim include Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo. Fernandes and Casemiro have been regular starters, featuring in every Premier League game so far this season.
Despite the club’s busy summer, which saw the arrival of players like Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, a marquee midfield signing didn’t happen. One reason for this was the high asking price for certain targets. For example, Brighton reportedly valued midfielder Carlos Baleba at around £100 million, a figure that was likely prohibitive after United had already spent a substantial £215 million on other acquisitions.
The club also made some interesting decisions regarding their young talent. Toby Collyer was sent on a season-long loan to West Brom to gain first-team experience. Meanwhile, youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who was fighting for a starting spot with Bruno Fernandes, had his request to go out on loan blocked by the club.
Manager Amorim publicly stated that he wanted Mainoo to stay and compete for a place, emphasizing the healthy competition within the squad. This commitment was demonstrated when Mainoo played against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup and came on as a substitute against Burnley following an injury to Maso
n Mount.
